Fearn Tree
From the 18th March until the 14th April, we’re under the Alder Moon. This is known by the Celts, as the Fearn, pronounced “Fairu” moon. In Folk Lore she goes by the moniker of Owler. This is a time of accelerated growth and the beginnings of your manifestation, spring has arrived!
Cut Me & I Bleed
When you cut an Alder, it’s wood it changes from white to orange, like it’s bleeding. Lending it nicely to superstition, especially as these are the Goddess colours and a sign of fertility. The Alder seeds are spiral shaped, small brown cones, symbolic of the cycle of life.
Bridge Betwixt Heaven & Earth
Indeed, Alder is flourishing along river banks, with her roots in the water and her branches in the air, bridging the magic space between Heaven and Earth. This is the King of the Waters.
Both Female & Male
This is the Ostara, or Easter if you prefer, tree. She represents balance, the balance between male and female, the balance between your intuitive self and your pragmatic self, the balance between night and day; like the Equinox.
This is the time for facing up to what you have been avoiding, she reduces anxiety and nerves, so get hugging.
Rebalance Yourself
In terms of magic, draw it wisely from the depths on your inner-hidden self, for it will come to bear, keep balanced. I recommend a focus for re-balancing anything out of kilter, like your diet…. Mine certainly needs that!
Health Possibilities
An oil made from Alder, is believed to relieve stiffness by working with our Muscular System. Thus, helping us to move forward flexibly and comfortably.
King of the Water
The Celts used Alder to make charcoal and weaponry. This was done in the spring, in preparation for the hunting season ahead. This tree is prized for her resilience against water, which magically only makes her stronger instead of giving way to rot.
Faerie Magic
Whistles, pipes and flutes were made of Alder, because the green pith is easy to press out. They were used to call the spirits of the Air. Its flowers and twigs were used as charms in Faerie Magic.
Connections
Unsurprisingly, her ruling planet is watery Neptune but her connection to both the earth and the stars mean that she has both Water and Fire as her elements. Thus, her gods are both Apollo and Odin.
Her colour is Royal purple, something to consider if this is your moon or you fancy co-ordinating your wardrobe to the moons. Therefore she is linked to protective Amethyst and mentally agile Lapis Lazuli.
Pioneering
It is said, that people born under this moon are more able to find their life purpose and unafraid to take their journey, inspiring others to follow. They are blessed with an easy going charm, gained from their confidence, focus and fidelity. Also brave, more prone to becoming an entrepreneur and showing people a different way.
