Mabon: The Second Harvest Festival

Now, in case I haven’t mentioned it before, sabbats are all about celebrating the phases of the sun, and this one’s called Mabon by modern Pagans. The name comes from Mabon, the Child of Light from Welsh mythology, the son of Modron, our Earth Mother Goddess. Pretty cool, right? It’s a beautiful way to celebrate the bounty we’ve gathered while acknowledging that winter is on the way.

Over in Druid circles, they call this Mea’n Fo’mhair – try saying that three times fast! It’s their way of giving thanks to the Green Man, the God of the Forest, and they love to offer ciders, wines, herbs, and all sorts of lovely natural goodies to the trees. Honestly, how often do we stop to show love to the trees around us? They work so hard for us, giving us air, shade, and connection to the earth. Show them a little love next time you’re out walking, will you?

Mark your calendars, because this year’s equinox is happening on September 22nd, 1.43pm GMT. But don’t stress if you can’t get your tree-hugging in at the exact minute; anywhere between the 21st and 23rd will do. It’s all about intent, my loves. At this exact moment, the sun is sitting directly on the equator, giving us that perfect balance before it starts to move again. The gateway to the darker months is wide open.

With the North Pole tilting away from the sun, nights get longer, the air cooler, and daylight starts to disappear.
